On Saturday night at the NT Sports Awards, Benn Prowse from Gove Peninsula SLSC took home the NT Volunteer of the Year award.
This is the first time surf lifesaving have won in any category at the NT Sports Awards and is great recognition for Benn, and the Gove Peninsula SLSC who have achieved a lot in the last few years.
In addition to contributing 53.5 volunteer patrol hours during the 2017 season, Benn was instrumental in many other projects at the Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club, including being heavily involved in obtaining grants to assist with the building of a new club house.
As Vice President of the club, Benn successfully obtained numerous grants to assist with the building of a their new club house. He has been integral in conversations with local companies and interested parties to ensure the building was completed in time for season 2018.
Benn provides valuable assistance to the Nippers program by taking on the role of U9/10 Age Manager, this involves teaching surf safety skills to up to 15 nippers for a few hours every Sunday morning of the season. Benn enthusiastically puts the kids through their paces, assisting them to gain confidence on the beach, in the water and to achieve their age group awards.
In the surf sport arena, Benn has been instrumental in the re-establishment of GPSLSC Boat Crew, who competed at NT Champs in 2017. Benn also competed in Open events at intra-club carnivals and at NT Titles as an individual.
Whilst Benn has recently relocated to Broome, we know he will continue to be a part of surf lifesaving and wish him the best of luck. We will be sure to see him on a beach again soon!
