BERT Emergency Response

Meet BERT

Our Beachside Emergency Response Trailer

BERT — the Beachside Emergency Response Trailer — is the newest member of the SLSNT team. BERT is a community asset that connects beach users directly with lifesavers in an emergency, helping keep NT beaches as safe as possible.

BERT is fitted with an emergency call button that connects directly to Surf Life Saving NT, putting you through to a lifesaver when you need help most. It also contains a storage compartment accessible in an emergency, stocked with an AED, first aid kit, and vinegar.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is an Emergency Response Beacon?

An Emergency Response Beacon is a device placed in locations frequently used by the community to call lifesavers in an emergency. BERT is the first ERB in the Territory and is part of a 24-month trial being run by Surf Life Saving NT to support beach users in Darwin.

  • What is Public Rescue Equipment (PRE)?

Public Rescue Equipment is a separate trial being run by Surf Life Saving Australia to assess the use and effectiveness of rescue equipment made available to the public. As part of this trial, BERT is equipped with a Surf Life Saving Rescue Tube.

  • Are the cameras always recording?

No. BERT's cameras are activated only during emergencies and monitored by lifesavers during those activations to support the emergency response. Footage is stored on a secure server and the cameras are not designed for continuous operation.

  • Who does BERT call?

Pressing the emergency call button on BERT connects you directly with Surf Life Saving NT and puts you through to a lifesaver who can assist in emergencies.

  • What is in the first aid compartment?

BERT's storage compartment contains an AED, a first aid kit, and vinegar — accessible to the public in an emergency.

  • What should I do if I hear BERT's siren?

BERT's siren is only activated in an emergency when lifesavers and first responders need the public to evacuate the water. If you hear a continuous siren from BERT, please leave the water immediately.
