Nippers
About Nippers
Want your child to be apart of a fun and activity community?
Surf Lifesaving is an amazing activity for growing a child’s confidence as well as providing a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in the beach environment. Nippers is a great way to introduce your child to new friends whilst having fun and learning life-long skills!
No matter where your child partakes in the Nippers program across the country the one thing the program has is common nationally is that it’s a community of fun! The Nipper’s program caters for children aged 5-12 years so it’s a great opportunity for children to be apart of a safe and support community while making new friends along the way.
Nipper participants will develop the ability to become a knowledgeable participant in lifesaving beach patrols as well as be included in a wide range of surf sport activities. All 3 clubs based in the Northern Territory run Nipper programs from May - August depending on the club.
At completion of the program, when your child reach 13 years old, they will be able to gain their Surf Rescue Certificate to become a qualified surf lifesaver who can patrol our beaches and provide a service to the community.
What do Nippers learn
Each club across the Northern Territory delivers the iconic Nippers program, with sessions tailored to suit their local community.
Today’s juniors are the future of Surf Life Saving NT, making it vital to nurture and support young people through this program. By doing so, we help strengthen coastal safety and build connected, resilient communities.
Surf awareness
Learn how to read the beach and understand changing conditions, including identifying hazards and staying safe in the surf.
Individual safety
Develop awareness of personal safety, including recognising potential risks at the beach and in everyday situations.
Lifesaving skills
Be introduced to essential lifesaving techniques and the role of a lifesaver, building the foundation for future patrol involvement.
Surf sports skills
Build confidence through a variety of surf sports, including swimming, board paddling and beach events like beach flags.
Nippers is not only a fun way for your child to enjoy the beach in a safe environment, it also offers children an educational pathway through the delivery of the SLSA Junior Development Program. This program is designed to ensure children have fun at the beach while participating in lessons that will pathway them to becoming a fully rounded participant in both lifesaving and sport - we like to call it 'Serious Fun'.
