About Us

Who we are

Surf Life Saving NT is a volunteer, not-for-profit community service organisation and the peak agency for coastal safety in the Northern Territory.

We are part of a national movement that has been embedded in the Australian way of life for more than 100 years, built on service, community, and a shared commitment to keeping people safe in and around the water.

In the Northern Territory, that commitment takes on a unique importance.

Our work is shaped by local conditions, geography, and community needs—requiring a strong, responsive, and community-driven approach to water safety.

Our purpose is simple and enduring: to protect life, save life, and promote life.

Keeping the NT safe since 1971

Surf lifesaving has been present in the Northern Territory since 1971, when the Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club was established in Nhulunbuy.

Surf Life Saving NT was formed in 1988 and incorporated in 1991, creating a unified organisation to support clubs, members, and lifesaving services across the Territory.

Since then, surf lifesavers have made a strong and positive contribution both on and off the beach. With each passing year, we continue to grow in capability, membership, and impact within the community.

Our community

Surf Life Saving NT has three affiliated clubs:

Darwin Surf Life Saving Club
(Casuarina Beach)

Mindil Beach Surf Life Saving Club

(East Point Beach)

Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club
(Town Beach, Nhulunbuy)

Together, these clubs are supported by around 500 active members who volunteer their time to keep the beachgoing community safe.

Our members represent a diverse cross-section of the community, united by a shared commitment to service, safety, and supporting one another.

Water safety in the Territory

The Northern Territory presents unique challenges when it comes to water safety, including distance, environment, and changing conditions.

Our volunteers and services play a critical role in ensuring support is available where and when it is needed — helping to build safer, more confident communities in and around the water.

Our base

Surf Life Saving NT's headquarters is in Coconut Grove, Darwin.

Our head office supports operations across the Territory and is home to the Australian Lifesaving Academy and the Australian Lifeguard Service.

Surf Life Saving NT is proud to serve the Northern Territory community through volunteer service, education, rescue, and a shared commitment to safer coastal environments.
