History & What We Do

The origins of Surf Life Saving

The origins of surf lifesaving can be traced back to September 1902, when Mr William Gocher defied regulations at Manly Beach by bathing during prohibited daylight hours.

His actions, along with others at the time, challenged existing restrictions and led to the eventual legalisation of daytime surf bathing. As beach swimming rapidly grew into a popular Australian pastime, so too did the risks associated with the ocean.

In response, small groups of experienced swimmers and surfers began forming volunteer lifesaving groups to assist those in danger. As these groups expanded, the need for coordination led to the formation of the New South Wales Surf Bathing Association on 18 October 1907.

This marked the beginning of a structured movement that has since grown into Surf Life Saving Australia — a modern, nationally recognised organisation dedicated to water safety, rescue, and community education.

What we do

Surf Life Saving NT delivers a broad range of services that support community safety, prevention, and response across the Territory.

  • Lifesaving Services

Surf lifesavers are highly trained volunteers whose primary responsibility is to prevent drowning and injury at the beach and surrounding open waters.

They support safe participation in activities such as swimming, surfing, boating, fishing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and water skiing.

This is achieved through volunteer Surf Rescue Patrols at local beaches, providing a visible safety presence and immediate response when needed.
